recap - Sandpoint,ID International Draft Horse Show, 22 Septemberl 2002, Sunday
Gary and I made it to Sandpoint for the International (as in Canada and USA) Draft Horse Show. We were only able to go for one day, so we chose the day with the eight-horse and eight-mule hitches. This strategy had one minus, we missed the special 20 mule hitch that they cobbled together from several different teams.

We were especially impressed with the mules. They were very serious and pleased with themselves for "doing very important work." They seemed very much like the ponies in this respect. I especially enjoyed the tandem hitches, due to the applicability of this hitch to the very common easy-entry carts. It seems like a good way to be able to drive a team without a lot of new equipment. One thing that I noticed was that the back mule had no lines on its bit.  The lines from the lead horse just passed through rings on the throatlatch of the bridle.

The four-horse and four-mule hitches didn't do any fancy maneuvers, perhaps because there were so many of them that the organizers couldn't make the logistics work. The eights had to weave some cones and backup between cones. Very impressive, but we missed the "parking" that they had the six's do when we went to the Deerlodge show a few years ago. The whole hitch would swing to the right to park, and then back to the left to move out again.
