| recap - Horseback Soccer, Lazy
Bow Ranch, 1st & 3rd, Tuesdays of the month
Sorry about the lack of quality and scarcity of photos, my camera's flash is next to useless. We use a five-foot ball, and divide the arena up into zones, as in polo. The number of players on each team must be equal, and one player from each team occupies each zone, and cannot leave the zone. For four players (two on each team), the arena would have just one line down the center (like a 50 yard line), and you really can't play with less than 4 people. Six is better. For six players, there would be two lines drawn across the field, creating three zones altogether. The goals are at each end, and can be cobbled together from cones, barrels, or just lines in the sand. We're not very competitive, so most of the draw of the game is the laughter. At the first session, Ken's horse Tuff was all over the ball. He is a good cow pony, and used to pushing things around. Batting the ball with his head, all four feet, and his side, he left the rest of the equine crew in the dust. Alex the Polish Arabian learned to canter backwards to avoid the bogie rolling at her, but I was able to persuade her to push it, carefully, if no other horses were in the vicinity looking like they might want to take it from her. |
